Ammonia refrigeration systems (NH₃)

Industrial R717 ammonia refrigeration, with flooded evaporators, direct expansion, glycol loops and NH₃/CO₂ cascades.

Ammonia (R717) is one of the oldest refrigerants used in refrigeration systems. It is a natural refrigerant with zero ozone depletion potential and virtually zero global warming potential.

Its excellent thermodynamic properties make it particularly suitable for large-capacity industrial refrigeration, where energy efficiency and operating costs are especially important.

Using ammonia requires strict safety measures, primarily because of its toxicity. Ammonia is also incompatible with copper and certain copper alloys, so suitable materials and components must be used.

An ammonia system may require a higher initial investment than some synthetic-refrigerant alternatives. In high-capacity industrial applications, energy savings can offset this difference over its operating life.

Marco & Alex experience

Marco & Alex designs and installs industrial ammonia refrigeration systems using a variety of configurations:

  • Flooded evaporator systems with natural or pumped refrigerant circulation.
  • Direct-expansion systems.
  • Secondary coolant circuits, including glycol.
  • Centralised systems with reciprocating or screw compressors.
  • Two-stage installations and NH₃/CO₂ cascade systems, including arrangements with an intermediate coolant.

Our experience includes refrigeration systems ranging from several hundred kW to over 2 MW for industrial chilling and freezing processes.

The system design depends on process requirements, required capacity, operating temperatures, energy performance and operating conditions.

Design and installation include the necessary safety measures and technical documentation to meet applicable regulatory requirements.
